9787 Antique Italian Gilt and Silver Monstrance

A rare medieval copper gilt and silver monstrance with a steeple top. The central section has a glass hinged door flanked either side by two niches containing the figures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul; the pillar tops are detachable. The knopped stem is mounted with 4 saint figures. The hexafoil foot, beautifully engraved and chased, is mounted with 3 silver discs engraved with Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary and Saint Sebastian. The underside bears an engraved inscription in old Italian, dated 1524, for the Italian church of San Piero di Porto di Legnago, near Verona. Height 38.5cm. Width 14.8cm. Italian. Date circa 1524. There are no silver marks which is normal for a religious article of such an early date.

A rare early silver processional cross. The embossed silver has applied plaques to the front and reverse and a “corpus” (figural image of Christ’s body). Bright parcel gilt finish. Bronze terminals enhance the ornate form of the cross. Height 48.5cm including the metal rod support, 40.5cm without. Width 29cm. Unmarked. Probably Italian circa 1600.

A large and imposing antique silver jug with an applied spout, harp shaped handle, on a spreading foot. Excellent plain style with traces of the original hand beaten finish. Very good weight and thick gauge silver. To the front is a hand engraved armorial with a coronet and motto “Micat Inter Omnia”, all within a band of tied plumage. This early jug shape was replaced in the 1680’s by the helmet shaped ewer. Contains 1050ml. Weight 812g, 26.1 troy oz. Height 22cm (to top of handle), 18.7cm (top rim). Spread 20.2cm. Top diameter 11.4cm. Italian marks for Rome, 1671.

A stylish pair of late 18th century Sicilian silver cartaglorias containing the original texts in old fashioned script. The oval bead bordered frames have applied gilt silver swags, leaves and flower motifs, the bases are raised on square supports. The sheet silver frames are pinned onto carved softwood backs. Height 26.7 cm. Width 23 cm. Marked on the bottom left hand corner with “GC” for Guiseppe Caltagirone of Trapani, Sicilia. Circa 1790.

Solid silver, probably 80% pure, with loaded interior. Height 46 cm, 55 cm (overall). Stamped on one of the bases with a continental silver stamp. Italian or Netherlands. Circa 1650.

10297 17th Century Antique Silver Pomander

An exquisite little historical item dating back to circa 1650. The antique silver pomander of “segmented-apple” form has eight leaf-shaped loculi which unfold when the bell shaped finial is released/unscrewed. The central section has four compartments, for spice, herbs or perfume, which are fitted with small rectangular hinged doors marked with Latin names – “Nerdi” for spikenard, “Carvi” for carroway, “Macis” for Mace and “Cocco” for coconut known for its antibacterial properties. The perfume cells still retain traces of the original perfumed wax compound. Weight 33 grams, 1 troy ounce. Height 4.8cm. Spread 6.6cm fully extended. The pomander is made of unmarked silver which is quite usual for a small article of this date. Probably Italian. Circa 1650.

A tall antique Italian silver cup with gilt interior and having a short bowl over a knopped stem and wide spreading foot. All beautifully decorated with foliate scrolls and cherubs. Around the top edge there is a hand engraved bishop’s armorial. Gilt interior and gilt band around the top. Weight 805 grams, 26 troy ounces approx. Height 29 cms. Diameter of top 9 cms. Italian silver marks for Palermo 1680. Maker either Gaetano Signorelli, Giuliano Strimi or Gaspano Scimeca.

A 17th century silver cup and matching cover with original bright gilt interior. With ovolo borders and chased acanthus leaves. The lid has a small pine cone finial. Probably ecclesiastical, a pyx box. Weight 214 grams, 6.8 troy ounces. Height 12 cms, 16.5 cms to top of finial). Diameter 9.5 cms. The edge of the base has the cross key town mark for Rome, Italy. Also the ‘bee’ maker’s mark (see Bulgari Parte Prima, Vol 2, No 1124). Date 1687/1697.

Suspended on 3 long chains are the snuffer, knife and tweezer tools. Underneath the base you can see the handmade hammered finish. Weight 536 grams, 17.2 troy ounces. Height 33 cms. Diameter of base 12.5 cms. Marked around the base and on the tools with Italian silver marks for Rome and makers mark for Giuseppe Pagliari 1819-1849.

The quality of this piece is excellent and the most imposing feature is the graceful curved spout in the form of a horse’s head. Every attention has been paid to detail with broad decorative borders, applied mounts to the ends of the handle and base of the spout, and a large bird finial. Engraved on the base with an initial. Weight 950 grams, 30.5 troy ounces. Contains 1400 ml. Height 36 cms. Spread across spout and handle 23.5 cms. Marked with silver stamps for Naples silver grade 834.
