Description

A full set of sterling silver cutlery for 8 people in the popular Old English pattern. Good plain design. Total 64 pieces. Complete with 2 matching sets of sterling silver handled knives with stainless steel blades. Weight excluding knives 2591 grams, 83.3 troy ounces. All pieces matching Sheffield 1991, maker Henry Hutton & Sons (except for 4 of the large spoons which are Sheffield 1994, maker William Hutton & Son Ltd).

Biography

William Hutton

William Hutton, manufacturing silversmiths and platers, established in Birmingham in 1800, transferred to Sheffield in 1832. After Hutton's death the business continued under his son William Carr Hutton and his youngest son Herbert Hutton (senior, born 1843) as William Hutton & Son.
William Carr Hutton died in 1865 and c. 1870 Herbert Hutton Sr. was joined by his brothers James Edward Hutton (b. 1839) and Robert (b. 1840) and the name changed to William Hutton & Sons. Their first London showroom opened in 1863, they acquired Rupert Favell & Co the London manufacturing silversmiths, and the firm became William Hutton & Sons Ltd. In 1902 they acquired Creswick & Co in 1902 and used their CROSS ARROWS mark. The firm also used the trade mark ANGLE PLATE
The company closed in 1930 when it was absorbed by James Dixon & Sons Ltd.

Condition

This complete set of sterling silver flatware is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. All pieces have matching English silver hallmarks (apart from 4 large spoons - see above). Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
