Description

A fine and realistic antique tortoise table bell modelled with a solid sterling silver shell and a body made from bronze effect steel. The underside holds a clockwork winding mechanism that sounds the bell when the head or the tail is pressed. Spread 17.5 cms. Height 6 cms. Shell measures 9.3 x 11.5 cms. Silver hallmarked on the shell for Chester 1912. Silver makers mark and stamped underneath for maker Grey & Co.

Grey & Co, The firm was founded in London by William Grey in 1876 and from 1886 to 1936 was active under the style of Grey & Co. Grey & Co was noted for their novelties in silver and supplied retail establishments such as Asprey & Co (London) and P. Orr & Sons (Madras, Rangoon & Calcutta).

Condition

This charming tortoise bell is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Fully stamped with clear English silver hallmarks. Makers mark also on the steel underside.
