A fine antique sterling silver wine jug in the elegant classical style typical of this well regarded maker. With a tall shapely form on a pedestal foot and curved wooden handle with discreetly decorated end mounts. Weight 830 grams, 26.6 troy ounces. Contains 850 ml. Height 28.5 cms. Spread 15.5 cms. London 1787. Maker John Scofield.






Biography

John Scofield

John Scofield (or Schofield), highly prominent late 18th century London silversmith. No record of apprenticeship of freedom. 1st mark entered as plateworker in 1776 with Robert Jones. 2nd mark alone 1778. 3rd mark 1787. Well known for his impeccable craftsmanship and elegant restrained taste. His candlesticks and candelabra are highly prized.

Condition
