A beautiful 19th century silver oil lamp (or lucerna) modelled as a cherub holding a shell shaped oil reservoir; the tall central column in the form of a tree. The cherub figure is expertly modelled and culminates in a snake’s head and tail coiling around the tree. Attached to the lamp is a shell snuffer and fish shaped dibber tool, each suspended by a long silver chain. The lamp would originally have had a carrying handle and reflector screen. Attached to the wooden underside is a collection label.
Ideal for conversion to a table lamp.
Weight including wooden base 1800 grams, 57.8 troy ounces
Height 46.4cm. Base measures 16.6cm.
Made in Rome, Italy.
Maker Giuseppe Boroni.
Mark. Stamped on the side of the base with Italian silver marks and maker’s mark.
This charming silver lamp is in very good condition. Excellent colour and workmanship. Lacks the handle and reflector. We have left the small screw at the top of the tree to facilitate conversion to a table lamp. Shows moderate signs of wear commensurate with age.

Giuseppe Boroni, Italian silversmith, active in Rome 1787-1830. Born in 1741, Giuseppe is recorded as already working for his father in 1771. Confirmed Maestro Argentiere in 1787. In 1788-1803 Giuseppe was working alongside his brother Pietro and Giovanni Battista in the family workshop. 1791-1797 elected 2nd Console. By 1810 Giovanni appears to have fallen on hard times. Died 1830.
