Description

An antique silver goblet formed from a coconut mounted with a broad silver band of “V” shape hatching and vertical strapwork in the 16th/17th style. The spreading foot has an embossed band of gadroon decoration. A sign of good quality is the interior silver mount which holds the coconut securely to the foot. Hand engraved to the top rim are owner’s initials “PWE” within stars.

Marks. There is a small continental silver mark (unidentified) stamped on the top rim next to the owner’s initials. The design of the foot has a continental appearance.

Literature: Coconuts were prized in early times for their healing powers and drinking vessels were often formed from them. The coconut cup is a variety of standing cup, made and used in Europe in the 15th and 16th Century, with a revival in Georgian England. Usually they have a pedestal foot or 3 ornamental feet and are mounted in silver or Old Sheffield plate.

In used condition. The silverwork has some small dents and bruises and there are signs of repairs to the strapwork. The coconut has a couple of small splits.
