Description
A superb antique silver rosewater dish dating from the mid 1600’s. Deep relief and substantial size. The platter has a broad gadroon edge and a raised centre enclosed by a high relief band of embossed acanthus leaves. This decoration is typical of the time. The centre has a large hand engraved armorial within plumage feathers.
Weight 1701g, 54.7 troy oz.

Marks. Maker’s mark only. Stamped on top 3 times with “DR in a shield” attributed to Daniel Rutty – see David Mitchell’s “Silversmiths in Elizabethan and Stuart London”.
Literature. It is very rare to find a charger of this type and age. The dish was probably used as a rosewater dish.
Condition
This dish is in good condition with a small amount of wear commensurate with age. The engravings are sharp. Small signs of a couple of earlier restorations.

Maker: Daniel Rutty
Daniel Rutty, London silversmith, apprenticed to Roger Stevens 1641, free by service in 1650. After his death (before 1676) Daniel’s widow continued the business with the help of apprentice Samuel Webb. Daniel bound 10 apprentices during his career including Charles Dutton (turned over to Francis Leake). His recorded works include several communion cups, a flagon 1663 , a large salver on foot 1664 and a beaker 1662.
