Description

An elegant little antique silver taperstick with knopped stem and rectangular base. Classic plain style and straight lines. Hand engraved to the foot is the crest of a fleur de lys with crown below. Cast silver.

Weight 101 grams, 3.2 troy ounces.
Height 9.8cm, 3.8ins. Diameter of base 6.7cm, 2.6ins.
London 1722.
Maker Matthew Cooper, master candlestick maker.
Sterling silver.

Marks. Stamped with a full set of English silver hallmarks underneath the base.

Literature: Tapersticks, averaging about 5 inches high are miniature table candlesticks used to hold a wax taper. They are rarer than candlesticks and very few exist prior to the Queen Anne period. They usually appear in singles and pairs of taper sticks command a premium price.

Condition

The candlestick is in very good condition with just a little wear consistent with age.

Maker: Matthew Cooper

Matthew Cooper, apprenticed to Robert Cooper 1693. Turned over 1693 to Joseph Bird. First mark entered as largeworker, 1702. . Signatory as “working goldsmith” to the petition complaining of the competition of “necessitous foreigners not having served seven years of apprenticeship", February 1716. Son Robert apprenticed to him, 1725. His mark is usually found on candlesticks, as is his master Joseph Bird. He was church warden of St John Zachary in 1713.
