The first Antique Silver Trays were oval shaped and did not appear until the late 18th century. The rectangular form was not generally seen until the early 1800’s. Some early salvers were originally called trays however this term is only used now when there are side carrying handles.
Large trays are often called tea trays and they were often made as part of an extensive and fully matching tea service. Long slender trays are popular for use as drinks trays. Extra large trays are particularly prized by interior designer for use as a coffee or side table.

An outstanding lot. A rare pair of George I silver sideboard dishes of plain circular form with wide borders. Large size and good heavy weight. *Britannia standard silver. Excellent patina. The centres are finely engraved with armorials within a baroque cartouche of strapwork and foliage, a shell above, a bearded mask below. The arms are those of Lane. Diameter 51cm, 20ins. Total weight approx. 6,950 grams, 224 troy ounces. London 1724. Maker David Tanqueray. A highly esteemed Huguenot maker.

An extremely large and imposing silver lidded tankard of tapering cylindrical form with a coopered band to the body. Britannia standard silver*. The embossed vertical fluting and bands of hand chased matted decoration are typical of the period. To the front is a hand engraved armorial within a large decorative cartouche. An unusual feature is the double thumb piece which attaches to both the handle and the lid. The handle has engraved owner’s initials. Good patina. Contains 1750 ml. An early antique German silver dish (or possibly wine taster) of plain oval form with a scalloped border. To the centre there is a charming bird scene surrounded by shell border and pin prick designs. The cast side handles have a bird’s head design on top. Original interior gilding. Weight 136 grams, 4.3 troy ounces. Height 2.75cm. Top of dish measures 17.25 x 13.5cm. Spread 21.5cm. Augsburg, Germany. Makers mark “IK”. Circa 1690.

A good early English silver flat lidded tankard. Britannia standard silver*. Lovely plain design and hand beaten silver. The tankard has a simple straight sided form and S scroll handle finishing in a decorative thumb piece with shell decoration. Hand engraved to the front there is a large decorative cartouche containing an armorial. Good patina. An interesting feature is the royal stamp for ‘William Rex’ on the reverse side of the body. Contains 1075 ml. Weight 759 grams, 24.3 troy ounces. Height 18 cms (to top of thumb piece). Spread 19cms. Diameter 10.8 cms (top). London 1701. Maker Seth Lofthouse.

A rare piece of British provincial silver. A Scottish or Yorkshire silver beaker of plain, tapered cylindrical form having a plain base with simple foot wires. Good size and weight. Excellent patina. The underside displays very prominent soldering – see condition report. Contains 250 ml. Weight 158 grams, 5 troy ounces. Height 9.9cm. Diameter 7.8cm. Yorkshire or Scotland circa 1691. Maker’s mark “Crown over S.S”.
