Description
A rare pair of antique silver candlesticks with ionic column form and gadroon borders. The columns and stepped square bases are beautifully chased with ribbons and tendrils of harebell flowers and foliage. Removable nozzles. Filled bases.
Height 28.5cm. Base 12.25 x 12.25cm.
London 1759.
Maker John Wren I.
Sterling silver.
Marks. Both candlestick bases have full and matching English silver hallmarks, some are not fully punched. One nozzle has the lion and makers mark, the other just has the lion mark.
Condition
These lovely candlesticks are in very good condition. The unusual chased decoration is still crisp.

John Wren I, apprenticed to William Howard 1721, free 1728. Entered mark as smallworker 1728. John Wren II, apprenticed to Thomas Whipham 1747, free 1754. First mark entered as largeworker in partnership with Thomas Whipham 1757. Second mark alone 1775. Third mark 1780. Retired 1790, died 1815.
