    10297 17th Century Antique Silver Pomander

    An exquisite little historical item dating back to circa 1650. The antique silver pomander of “segmented-apple” form has eight leaf-shaped loculi which unfold when the bell shaped finial is released/unscrewed. The central section has four compartments, for spice, herbs or perfume, which are fitted with small rectangular hinged doors marked with Latin names – “Nerdi” for spikenard, “Carvi” for carroway, “Macis” for Mace and “Cocco” for coconut known for its antibacterial properties. The perfume cells still retain traces of the original perfumed wax compound. Weight 33 grams, 1 troy ounce. Height 4.8cm. Spread 6.6cm fully extended. The pomander is made of unmarked silver which is quite usual for a small article of this date. Probably Italian. Circa 1650.

    10325 Antique Silver Table Trivet

    An unusual 17th century miniature table of rectangular form standing on cabriole legs. A perfect display for a small tea set or pair of candlesticks. The solid wood top, with inset armorial plaque, is mounted with a silver framework. The underside still has the original claws to hold the wood in place and the pretty little wing nuts for the silver plaque; the remains of an old collector’s label can be seen in the corner. Top measures 26.2cm x 16.4cm. Height 6.3cm. Maker “GJ”. English, circa 1680. Provincial silver. Probably East Anglian.

    10287 Charles II Antique Silver Tankard

    A rare example of early English chinoiserie silver. A finely engraved tankard with the flat hinged lid and s scroll handle typical of the period. Large size and good heavy weight. The body and lid are beautifully hand chased with a fantastical Chinese landscape containing long tailed birds and spidery plants. To the front there is an extraordinary bridge with a coiled snake or rope below. Contains 1500 ml. Weight 982 grams, 31.5 troy ounces. Height 18.6cm (to top of thumb piece). Spread 21cm. Diameter 12.3cm (top). London 1683. Maker St John Hoyte. Sterling silver. 17th century.

    A charming little late 17th century silver nutmeg grater of teardrop form, one side fitted with a serrated rasp. Each side has a hinged lid with stand-away hinge. Both covers are hand engraved with simple foliate decoration. Weight 29 grams, 0.9 troy ounce. Height 2.5 cm. Top 3.7 x 2.9 cm. Total spread across the covers 8.3cm. Unmarked silver. English. Circa 1690.

    10333 17th Century Antique Silver Nutmeg Grater

    An attractive little collector’s item. A silver nutmeg grater of cylindrical form, the tube containing a steel grater. The pull off lid is hand engraved with the Tudor rose and the tube has the hatched decoration typical for small silver objects dating back to the final quarter of the 1600’s. Silver weight 14g, about half a troy oz. Length 6.1cm. Diameter 2cm. Maker mark I.I. English circa 1690. Sterling silver.

    9539 William & Mary Antique Silver Miniature Mug

    A delightful little collector’s piece. This rare miniature (or toy) mug is an exact copy of a full size original. Of globular form it has a reeded and incised neck, and double scroll handle. This style was only made for a short period at the end of the 17th century and is the earliest type of mug you are likely to come across. The body is engraved with an exotic bird and leafy branches. Weight 14 grams, less than 1/2 troy ounce. Height 3.5cm. Spread 4.9cm. London 1693. Maker George Manjoy, a specialist toy maker.

    9674 Antique Silver Perpetual Calendar Snuff Box

    An 18th century silver snuff box with rotating dials to both sides. Very charming and retains the interior gilding. The panels have scrolled flower and chased decoration. The top side has the rotatable “Calendarium Perpetuum” which shows the days of the week (in old German script, and marked with their planetary signs) against days of the month. The reverse side has seven readout windows described by the headings on the rotatable disk (in old German script) – 1) month of the year with its number of days, 2) the important saints’ and feast days in the month, 3) sun’s Zodiacal position (represented by amusing little hand engraved zodiac symbols), 4) length of day, 5) length of night, 6) time of sun rise, and 7) time of sunset. A good example in very good condition. 126 grams, 4 troy ounces. Length 8.4cm. Width 5.5cm. Height 2cm. German. Probably 18th century circa 1750. Unmarked silver.

    An antique sterling silver ladle inset with a 22 carat solid gold guinea dated 1691. Elegant, slim design with a twisted horn handle and silver tip. The gold coin bears the heads of King William and Queen Mary of King George to the front, and on the reverse there are armorials for England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, and the date “1691”. Owner’s initials “T over I*I” are engraved to the front of the handle. Total weight 45 grams, 1.4 troy ounces. Length 32.5cm. Bowl 8.4 x 5.7cm. Unmarked silver, English, circa 1770. Inset 22 carat gold guinea coin, date 1691, diameter 2.5cm. 18th century.

    A lovely little novelty collector’s item. An early 19th century gold vinaigrette modelled as a travelling case. The hinged cover, with a carrying handle, is inscribed ‘Souvenir’. The cover opens to reveal a pierced hinged grille. 2 coloured gold, the body is a rich yellow gold and the flower highlights and body fluting are in copper gold. Approx. measurements – height 2cm (handle extended), length 1.8cm, width 1.5cm. Weight 4.7grams. Circa 1820. Unmarked gold. Continental.

    9646 Antique Enamel Opera Glasses

    A beautiful pair of antique opera glasses made of gilt brass metal and enamel. The binocular tops and extension knob are made of real mother of pearl. The pink enamel barrels are covered in gilt stars and have beaded cartouches and borders containing hand painted sprays of multi coloured flowers. The underside is inscribed “REG Armstrong 14.August 1884”. Measures – width 10.4 cm, closed height 6.3 cm, extended height 8.5 cm. Probably French. Circa 1884. Retailer’s mark Sharman D Neill, Belfast.

    Of Jewish interest. A large continental silver spice box in the form of a medieval tower with a turret surmounted by a cockerel. All over gilded. The top 2 sections, each containing a bell, sit above the spice box which has pierced and engraved decoration. The box has a drop-down door with scroll catch. Weight 286 grams, 9.1 troy ounces. Height 32 cm. Continental silver marks. Possibly Hanau, Germany. Circa 1890.

Hand engraved to the front is a large armorial within a decorative cartouche there is a matching crest on the reservoir lid and well. The matching stand has a cut-work frieze and stands on large shell feet, it has a removable burner well with push on top. Contains 1550 ml. Weight 1695 grams, 54.5 troy ounces.
