Literature. Wine labels, also known as “bottle tickets”, appear to have originated in the second quarter of the 18th century. They were made in many attractive designs and are a popular collecting field. Generally, the label is suspended around the neck of the bottle by a chain, although some are formed as plain collars which slip over the neck, or formed as a plain rectangle hinged from a wire ring. Among the many good makers are Hester Bateman and family, Phipps & Robinson, Samuel Bradley, Mary Binley and Paul Storr.

Madeira is a fortified wine made on the Portuguese Madeira Islands, off the coast of Africa. Madeira is produced in a variety of styles ranging from dry wines which can be consumed on their own, as an aperitif, to sweet wines usually consumed with dessert.

Yapp & Woodward was a Birmingham silver maker partnership, known for making visiting card cases. Yapp was also partners with Joseph Willmore at one stage and latterly both Yapp and Woodward were partners with Willmore. After the death of Woodward in 1847 Yapp entered into partnership with John Chinn.
