A good piece of antique provincial silver. An antique sterling silver mug of plain baluster design. The simple scroll handle is engraved with owners initials. Uninscribed.

Literature. The term “mug” is traditionally used for a single-handed, lidless drinking vessel. They are nearly all of either pint or half pint capacity. Antique silver mugs are very rarely found as early as tankards, the earliest seeming to date from about 1680

In very good condition. Retaining some fire marks from the original manufacture. Stamped underneath with a full set of English silver hallmarks.

Maker: John Langlands I/John Robertson I

John Langlands I & John Robertson I, Newcastle based silversmiths. Partnership was active 1778 to 1795 John Langlands, Newcastle based silversmith, patriarch of the Langlands family, who for sixty years were the largest silverplate producers in Newcastle. Apprenticed to Isaac Cookson, Langlands took over, in partnership with John Goodrick, the business of their ex-master when he died in 1754. John continued alone when Goodrick died in 1757. In 1778 John went into partnership with John Robertson I until 1795. After his death in 1793 his wife Margaret ran the business until the partnership was dissolved two years later. John Robertson, Newcastle silversmith. After his initial partnership with John Langlands 1778-1795, John Robertson I and David Darling created a short but productive partnership ending 15 months later. John Robertson worked on his own until his death in 1801. His widow, Ann continued the business in her own name until she retired in 1811, with the business transferring to her nephew John Robertson II.
