Description

A superb pair of George II rococo silver candlesticks, cast and chased in high relief with face masks and spiralling pendant flowers and grapes. Good size and heavy cast weight. The nozzles are original and rare for this early date.

Weight 2180 grams, 70 troy ounces.
London 1747. Maker Samuel Courtauld.
Sterling silver.

Literature. Few domestic silver candlesticks still exist before the reign of Charles II and 17th century examples are usually made from sheet silver and are light in weight. Cast candlesticks started to appear circa 1685 and are much heavier in weight. The first loaded candlesticks appeared circa 1765 and are made of sheet silver, and not cast.

Although many early candlesticks had fixed nozzles the first cast candlesticks were made without these useful drip pans. During the period c.1735-50 candlesticks with detachable nozzles appeared which facilitated much easier cleaning.

Marks. Stamped underneath the bases, spread around the outer edge, with a full set of clear and matching English silver hallmarks, nozzles unmarked.

Condition

Fine condition. The nozzles fit well.

Maker Information

Maker: Samuel Courtauld I

Samuel Courtauld I ((1720–1765), London silversmith, apprenticed to his father Augustin Courtauld 1734, free 1747. 1st mark entered as largeworker 1746. 2nd mark 1751. He married Louisa Perina Ogier in 1749 and they had 4 daughters and 3 sons of whom the eldest, Samuel II (1752 1821), followed his father into the Goldsmith’s trade. On Samuel I’s death in 1765 his wife Louisa Perina continued the family business and entered her own widow’s mark. Samuel Courtald I’s work is quite rare as few pieces of his work have survived and Grimwade describes Samuel’s silverwares as “characterised by a mild rococo taste, attractively executed…”.
