Description

An excellent quality little silver box with hinged lid and gilt interior. Very small size. The top bears a decorative scene of a castle or mansion, probably Haddon Hall, in a forest setting, the sky is represented in green enamel.

Weight 64 grams, 2 troy ounces.

Top measures 4.7.x 3.2cm. Height 1cm.

Marks. The base is stamped with a full set of English silver hallmarks; top with the lion and date mark.

Haddon Hall, the private residence of Lord and Lady Edward Manners, is set in the Peak District in the valley of the River Wye. With nine hundred years of history, it is one of the oldest houses in the country and moreover one of the only houses in England to have remained in one family’s ownership for its entire existence. The first owner was William Peverel, a favourite of William the Conqueror, whose ownership is recorded in 1086.

The silver and enamel is in very good condition. Bright gilt with no wear. There are shallow traces around the edge, possibly from a rubber band.
