A good set of four antique silver plates of plain design with traditional gadroon borders. Excellent quality and weight. Hand engraved to the edge with a coat of arms with crown and motto “Follow Me”.

Marks. Each is stamped with a clear and fully matching set of English silver hallmarks to the underside. The plates are numbered 10,15,16 and 17 and will have come from a large solid silver dinner service. Each bears the original scratchweight in old fashioned script.

Arms. These are the arms of Cambell of Glenorchy impaled with Gavin(e) of Langton House, Berwickshire. Lieutenant-General John Campbell, 1st Marquess of Breadalbane FRS (30 March 1762 – 29 March 1834), known as John Campbell until 1782 and as The Earl of Breadalbane and Holland between 1782 and 1831, was a Scottish soldier and landowner. He married Mary Gavin, daughter of David Gavin, of Langton House, Berwickshire, in 1793. The plates are dated the year after their marriage. They had one son and two daughters.

Literature. Antique Silver Dinner Plates and Meat Dishes. Dinner plates were usually made in dozens and larger quantities and often came as part of a suite of dishes including soup plates, oval serving plates and mazerines. These dishes very often came from grand houses and have finely executed coats of arms.
