A handsome antique sterling silver mug of baluster shape on a spreading foot. Large size and nice chunky style. The plain features are typical of the period. Very heavy gauge silver and excellent colour. Hand engraved to the front is a monogram in old fashioned script contained within a decorative cartouche.

Contains 550 ml.

Literature. The term “mug” is traditionally used for a single-handed, lidless drinking vessel. They are nearly all of either pint or half pint capacity. Antique silver mugs are very rarely found as early as tankards, the earliest seeming to date from about 1680c

This mug is in very good condition. Crisp engraving.

Thomas Parr I, London silversmith, apprenticed to Simon Noy 1687, free 1694. Livery 1712. 1st mark entered as largeworker undated, probably 1697. 2nd mark 1717. Livery 1712. Died c.1728 when his widow Sarah entered her own mark. Thomas Parr II, son of Thomas Parr II, free by patrimony 1733. 1st mark entered 1733, 2nd and 3rd marks 1739. Livery 1750. Court 1735. Warden 1771-3.
