Description

An outstanding quality antique sterling silver tea service of gourd shape, depicting Teniers style Dutch tavern scenes. The sides are deeply chased in relief, the handles cast as drunken peasants perched on tree branches, the teapot and coffee pot with ivory insulators and drunken figure finials, original pale gilt interiors. The drunken revellers are drinking, playing music, playing cards, womanising; there is a mother and child, even a giant dog. Every scene is different. The teapot and milk jug a have Bacchus face mask mounted spout. This very heavy set weighs 4,024 grams, 129.3 troy ounces. Teapot height 19.5 cms, spread 26 cms. This heavy set is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. The repousse decoration is crisp and well defined. Each piece has a clear and matching set of full English silver hallmarks; the coffee pot is stamped on the side of the body, the 3 other pieces underneath; both lids are hallmarked. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: John Aldwinckle & Thomas Slater

Aldwinckle & Slater originated with Henry Holland, born 1806, 1st mark entered 1838. He traded in partnership with Thomas Frercks at 13 Lower Smiths Street, Clerkenwell until Thomas retired in 1841. His elder son Henry Holland, born 1830, freedom of the Goldsmiths' Company 1851, entered his father's business which became Henry Holland & Son. In 1866 Henry Holland & Son bought Elizabeth Eaton & Son and moved to 16 Jewin Crescent, Aldersgate Street. Henry Holland (senior) retired c. 1880 and the firm became Holland, Son & Slater. Wheh Henry Holland (junior) retired in 1883 the firm became Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater, with Slater's sons, Alfred Thomas Slater and Walter Brindley Slater, as additional partners. The firm expanded and purchased Chawner & Co in 1883 and Robert Hennel & Sons 1887. When James Slater retired in 1884, Alfred Thomas Slater and John Aldwinckle remained as senior partners. John Aldwinckle died in 1894 and Henry Arthur Holland (son of Henry Holland junior) became partner. Circa 1922 the business was bought by Francis Higgins & Son Ltd but Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater continued to operate under its own name until 1932.
