Description

Description

A charming little collector’s item. This antique silver mug dates from the turn of the 1700’s and has a plain form with straight tapering sides. The dark wooden side handle indicates that the cup was intended for a hot beverage such as chocolate, a fashionable drink at this time. Made of unusually heavy gauge, hand beaten silver, the mug is very sturdy and usable. Hand engraved to the front is a family crest.

Contains 290ml.
Weight 179g, 5.75 troy oz.
Height 8cm. Diameter 6.6cm (top), 7.3cm (base).
London 1698/1702.
Maker Thomas Parr I.
Britannia standard silver, high purity 95.8%.
Scratchweight 5=14.

These unusual small mugs or cups for drinking chocolate are very rare and only seem to have been made for a short period at the end of the 17th century. The date letter is only partial visible. Date letters for 1698, 1702 and 1711 are similar however the likelihood is that the little mug has the earlier William III date of 1699 or 1702 and not the Queen Anne date of 1711.

Marks. Stamped on the side below the rim with a full set of English silver hallmarks. Very rubbed and difficult to make out:
1. “PA” within a shaped shield. Thomas Parr I’s first mark 1697-1716.
2. Britannia standard mark
3. Lion’s head erased
4. Date letter for either 1699 or 1702.

Condition

This little cup is in good condition with signs of use over the years. There are some dents around the base and the wooden handle shows signs of an earlier restoration.
