Description

A handsome antique sterling silver cruet set with a matching set of 3 silver casters and 2 silver topped and faceted crystal oil and vinegar bottles. The cinquefoil frame has 4 shell feet and a shaped decorative cartouche to the front (uninscribed). Total weight of silver 1385 grams, 44.5 troy ounces. Caster height 19 and 15 cms. Bottle height 19 cms. London 1736. All by the same maker Thomas Bamford, specialist castor maker.

This superb antique silver condiment set is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. The cruet frame has a full set of English silver hallmarks underneath for London 1739, the handle has the lion mark. The casters have the lion mark and makers (double struck on two bases) mark underneath, the tops are makers mark only. All pieces made by Thomas Bamford. The bottle tops are unmarked, which is normal for this time, the bottle tops fit snugly in the circular holders on the side of the frame. The glass has that lovely Georgian colour which you don't find today. One bottle has a tiny chip at the top underneath the silver top, both bottles are a bit cloudy. All fully functional, matching and original. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: Thomas Bamford

Thomas Bamford was a specialist caster maker whose master was Charles Adam, and his apprentice was Samuel Wood. The date of his freedom is not recorded, however, he entered 2 largeworker marks on 5th January 1720 and third (sterling) mark, 27th June 1720.
