Description
Of sporting interest – hare coursing. A charming antique sterling silver box with a hinged lid. Plain design with a hand engraved sporting scene on the lid and a geometric design on the base. Original gilt interior. Weight 66 grams, 2.1 troy ounces. Height 1.5 cms. Top measures 7.2 x 4.2 cms. Birmingham 1809. Maker Matthew Linwood.
Condition
This silver box is in good but used condition with no restoration. The internal gilt is original with a bit of wear. The hand engraving is crisp. Stamped inside with a full set of English hallmarks. The box is slightly out of shape from use and there is a small split on the top edge (see photo 3). Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: Matthew Linwood
Matthew Linwood I, Birmingham silversmith, registered 3 marks between 1773 and 1801. He also produced Sheffield plate from premises in Edmund St. His son Matthew Linwood (1756-1826) was a notable maker of silver boxes and was made Guardian of the Birmingham assay office in 1811. Matthew Linwood II’s son Matthew Linwood III (1783-1847) entered partnership with his father and their mark was registered in 1813.
