Description

A rare early English silver porringer with matching lid. The half flute decoration, popular from the reign of William and Mary, is accompanied by fish scale ornament and borders of hand engraving. Good size and weight. The quality and colour is excellent. To the front and back is a large decorative cartouche (uninscribed).

Marks. The cup is stamped on the edge of the rim (clear marks), and on top of the lid (worn marks but easily visible), with a full set of clear English hallmarks; both handles have the makers mark.

Literature: Porringers are two handled bowls and some have a cover. They can also be known as caudle cups although the origin of the porringer was for porridge and the caudle cup was for a type of broth. From the eighteenth century onwards, porringers and cups and covers were used mainly as centrepieces or ornaments. In recent times they have seen a resurgence in popularity for drinking and on the dining table. They make a very attractive baby gift.

This rare antique silver porringer is in very good condition. Good patina. The body and lid are fully matching. There are light bruises on the handles. The engraving is in good order with light signs of wear. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Isaac Dighton, London silversmith, apprenticed to William Browne, Citizen and Haberdasher, in 1665. Free 1672. Mark (Britannia) entered as largeworker undated, presumably 1697. Died 1707. Isaac bound 5 apprentices in the Haberdashers Company during his working career.
