Description

An antique sterling silver sugar box and matching cover, all with extensive embossed decoration of flowers and leaves. To the front is a cartouche containing a hand engraved crest. The interior still retains the original gilding. Weight 260 grams, 8.3 troy ounces. Height 15 cm (with lid), 10 cm (without lid). Diameter 11 cms. London 1773. Maker John Deacon.

This decorative silver box is in good condition with no damage or restoration. Stamped underneath with a full set of clear and matching English silver hallmarks, the lid has the lion and double struck makers mark. The engraved crest is worn. The interior gilt is original, the gilt inside the bowl is lighter than the lid gilt.

John Deacon, apprenticed to John Moore 1759, free 1766. Mark entered as plateworker 1776; his previous mark would have been entered in the preceding book which is missing.
