A large size antique silver salver with bead border and splay feet. Hand engraved to the top surface is a magnificent scrolling leaf cartouche containing an armorial and swan crest.

Marks. Stamped underneath with a full set of English silver hallmarks.

Armorial. These are the marital arms of a Blachford, possibly a son or grandson of John Blachford (1682 – 1759), Goldsmith and Lord Mayor of London in 1750. The wife’s arms (with 3 horse’s heads), impaled with her husband’s, aren’t listed in any of the usual reference books. An image is attached of a silver seal by Hester Bateman, London 1779? bearing the Blachford arms.

This lovely tray is in very good condition with moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. The engraved decoration is crisp and original.

Maker: John Crouch & Thomas Hannam

Thomas Hannam completed his apprenticeship to John Café in 1761 and went into partnership with John Crouch in 1765. The firm was known particularly as makers of fine quality trays, salvers and waiters. Their earlier marks also appear on cast candlesticks, very likely due to Hannam's apprenticeship to the Cafes.
