A charming antique silver mounted horn snuff box, the hinged lid with a silver mount and large Scottish thistle. The quality of the horn is particularly good.
Length 7.5cm. Diameter 3.7cm.
Unmarked silver.
Most probably Scottish.
Circa 1800.
Literature: Grinding tobacco leaves in order to inhale the powder dates from the mid 17th century in Europe however the first snuff boxes don’t seem to have appeared until the reign of William III circa 1695.
Condition
This desirable little Scottish collector's item is in very good condition. The horn is smooth and has a good colour. The silver is unmarked. The cork inside the lid is functional but worn.
