Maker Information

Maker: Robert Makepiece

There is a Robert Makepiece listed as a Newcastle maker in Jackson’s “Gold & Silver Marks” page 498. His distinctive “R.M” mark is dated as having been entered on the Assay office plate in 1728-30 however Jackson notes that the mark was probably in use some time before that date. The following details have been taken from Grimwade’s “London Goldsmiths 1697-1837”. Robert Makepiece I could possibly be a relative of the pre-mentioned Robert Makepiece but we've seen no documentation to that effect. Robert Makepiece I, admitted to the Newcastle Guild of Goldsmiths in 1755, free from Goldsmiths Hall by redemption 1759. Livery 1763. Recorded as working 1767-75 but no mark is known for this period. Also working with Edward Carter in 1777. Mark entered in partnership with Richard Carter as plateworkers 1777. Another mark in partnership with Daniel Smith and Robert Sharp 1778. Elected to court 1787. Warden 1792-4. Prime warden 1795. Robert Makepiece II, apprenticed to his father 1776. First mark entered with his brother Thomas II 1794. 2nd mark alone 1795. Livery 1791. Court 1801. Warden 1812-14. Prime Warden 1814. Died 1827.
