Louis Laroche

Louis Laroche, London silversmith, no record of apprenticeship or freedom. Possibly the grandson of Lewis Roch and Mary his wife, mentioned in the denization list of 1664 as “they are French and employed as tailors to the Queen and are desirous to spend their time in England”. Listed by Evans as Huguenot, Louis Laroche was godfather to Marguerite Cuan 1712 and Jacob Louis Tabois 1724. Member of the Dublin Goldsmiths Company 1675-97. 1st mark entered as largeworker 1725, 2nd mark 1739.

    An antique silver cream jug, with a good early date, of baluster form. With a shaped handle, curved rim and 3 hoof feet. Good gauge silver and nice chunky feel. Hand engraved to the front is an armorial crest. Weight 117 grams, 3.76 troy ounces. Height 10cm (top of handle, 8cm (top of pouring lip). London 1731. Maker Louis Laroche. Sterling silver.
