Samuel Wood
Samuel Wood (c.1704-1794), apprenticed to Thomas Bamford 1721, free 1730. First mark entered as largeworker, 1733. Second mark circa 1738. Third mark 1739. Fourth mark entered 1754. Fifth mark 1756. Warden 1758-60, and Prime Warden 1763. Through his apprenticeship to Thomas Bamford, who had been bound to Charles Adam, Wood came of a continuous line of specialist caster-makers and in turn trained both Jabez Daniell and Robert Piercey (q.v.), both clearly established also in the same line of production. Wood’s cruets and individual casters, although produced in quantity are of a uniformly high standard and one of the most attractively designed smaller items of plate, without which no reasonably equipped table of the eighteenth century appears to have been complete.

An excellent quality set of 3 antique sterling silver castors of baluster form. Classic plain style. The removable tops have pierced foliate scroll-work and spiral fluting. Each caster has a hand engraved coat of arms within a rococo cartouche. Very heavy gauge silver. Weight 1263 grams, 40.6 troy ounces. Tall castor – height 22 cms. The cinquefoil frame has 4 shell feet and a shaped decorative cartouche to the front with a hand engraved armorial. Each caster and bottle bears the same matching crest. An excellent antique sterling silver cruet set with a matching set of 3 silver casters and 2 silver topped and faceted crystal oil and vinegar bottles. The cinquefoil frame has 4 shell feet and a shaped decorative cartouche to the front with a hand engraved monogram. The pull off castor tops are prettily pierced and engraved. Total weight of silver 1189 grams, 38.2 troy ounces. Caster height 17 and 13.5 cms. Bottles height 17 cms. London 1752. All by the same maker Samuel Wood, known for his silver casters.

A charming antique sterling silver pepper caster of plain baluster form with a pull off cover pierced and criss-cross engraved. Good colour. To the front there is a large hand engraved armorial within a decorative cartouche. Weight 96 grams, 3 troy ounces. Height 13 cms. London 1748. Engraved to the front of the large caster there is an armorial and to the 2 smaller castors there is a crest of a bird. Total weight 303 grams, 9.7 troy ounces. Height 19.5/15 cms. A fantastic antique sterling silver cruet set with a matching set of 3 silver castors engraved with armorials and 2 crested silver and faceted glass oil and vinegar bottles. The cinquefoil frame has 4 shell feet and a shaped decorative cartouche, with matching armorial, to the front. Total weight of silver 1814 grams, 58.3 troy ounces. Castors height 18.5 and 16 cms. Bottles height 15 cms. London 1750. Maker Sam Wood.
The silver bottle tops are unmarked, they are crested and the tops fit perfectly into the silver frame.
There is a hand engraved armorial on the 3 castors and cartouche of the frame and a crest on the top of the oli and vinegar bottles. -
