A rare early English silver cup dating to the reign of Charles I. Nearly 400 years old and in very good condition. Plain tapering form on a shaped pedestal foot. Hand engraved to the front is a prick dot cartouche containing the letters ‘SE’, probably the original owner’s initials. This cup is an outstanding piece of antique silver in every way. Large size. Excellent patina. Heavy weight and gauge of silver. Fully marked in a straight line just below the rim and has the lion passant on the underside of the foot. Charming hand beaten finish as you’d expect from this period.

Contains 850 ml.
Weight 558 grams, 17.9 troy ounces.
Height 23cm. Diameter of top 13cm.
London 1635.
Escallop shell makers mark – see Jacksons page 109, (*it’s very rare for marks of this period to have a name associated with it). This maker was known for his wine cups and church plate.
Sterling silver.

Marks. The silver marks are very good, with just a little rubbing, but still perfectly clear and readable: Makers mark – shell (see Jacksons page 119) Assay office – leopards head for London Lion passant mark – sterling silver Date letter for 1635 Fully marked underneath the rim and lion marked under the foot just as you’d expect for a cup of this age. The chalice has been tested for water retention and does not leak.

Signed/Inscribed: *There are no precise records of silver makers marks prior to 1681 as all records were destroyed in the fire at Goldsmiths Hall in that year when the Assay Office and apartments of the Assayer and Clerk in the south west wing of the building were burned down.

This substantial antique silver cup is in very good condition. Heavy weight and silver gauge. Superb colour.
