Description
A rare find. An early English silver mug of large size and very heavy gauge silver dating from the Charles II period. Uninscribed. With a plain straight sided form, simple reeded bands to top and base and an “S” scroll handle. Excellent colour.
Weight 447 grams, 14.3 troy ounces.
Height 12.8 cm. Diameter 10.3 cm (top).
Contains 1000 ml.

Literature: This must one of the first mugs to be made in England. Mugs are very rarely found as early as tankards, the earliest seeming to date from about 1680.
Condition
This excellent tankard is in very good condition. Good patina. Heavy gauge silver. Stamped with a full set of English silver hallmarks. The makers mark is not fully struck but is clearly identifiable in Jacksons. Handle unmarked.

Maker: John Sutton
John Sutton, London silversmith, apprenticed to John Winterton 1661, turned over to Arthur Manwaring, free 1668. Sutton pursued a distinguished service in the Goldsmiths Company serving as Livery 1674, Assistant 1687, Touchwarden 1696, Third Warden 1701, Second warden 1703, Prime Warden 1707. His busy workshop bound 13 apprentices between 1668 and 1699.. His mark is the first entered in the largeworkers book started April 1697 and is awarded the distinction of a large ornamental script as „present Touchwarden“.
