Description

An antique gilt silver bowl of large size and exceptionally heavy weight; this excellent quality is just as you’d expect from a master silversmith trained by the world famous Paul Storr. Raised on a pedestal foot and having hinged lions mask side handles, this oval wine cooler takes two bottles. The deep relief applied decoration is covered in grape and vine leaf ornament, the centre ovals have a Bacchanalian scene with cherubs, a goat and an impish Bacchus, to either side there is a large bird and dolphin.

Weight 4218 grams, 135.6 troy ounces.

Condition

This imposing silver bowl is in very good condition. Exceptional weight. Excellent crisp decoration. Stamped on the side with a full set of clear and matching set of English silver hallmarks. Bright original gilt, slight wear. Minor surface scratching and a couple of slight dinks. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: John Houle

John Houle, London silversmith and son of John Houle, London, chaser, apprenticed to William Rock within the Vintners Company in 1798, free 1807. First mark entered in 1811 as plateworker, Clerkenwell, London. Second mark 1813. Livery of the Vintners in 1818 as silversmith. 3rd mark in partnership with his two sons, Daniel John Houle and Charles Houle in 1844. In 1845 Daniel and Charles Houle entered their own mark in joint partnership, working until 1884, supplying high quality silver articles in a large variety of styles to selected retailers. Some of their finest work included exquisite items such as this standing cup, often boasting gold inlay and parcel-gilding.
