A rare early English sterling silver chalice dating to the reign of James I. Over 400 years old and in very good condition. Plain design with a flared top and stepped pedestal foot. This would originally have had a cover (paten). Uninscribed. Excellent colour. Charming hand beaten finish as you’d expect from this period. Contains 220 ml. Weight 160 grams, 5.1 troy ounces. Height 15 cms. Diameter – top 8 cms, foot 7 cms. Extremely good silver marks for London 1610.

Literature: The makers mark is a crescent enclosing the letter “I” (Jacksons page 106) is possibly for James Cluatt. It’s very rare for marks of this period to have a name associated with it.

Signed/Inscribed: *There are no precise records of silver makers marks prior to 1681 as all records were destroyed in the fire at Goldsmiths Hall in that year when the Assay Office and apartments of the Assayer and Clerk in the south west wing of the building were burned down.

This lovely antique communion cup is in very good condition with no damage or repairs. The silver marks are clear and easy to read. Excellent patina. Fully silver hallmarked to the body. Lion mark (part mark) to the underside of the base. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
