Maker Information
Maker: Pelican in her piety
The “pelican in her piety” mark is recorded in the Norwich section of Jackson’s “Gold & Silver Marks of England” on silver spoons and a communion cup during the period 1624-39. Bonhams state on their website that “current scholarship suggests the mark of pelican in its piety may be that of Daniel Aynesworth”. In (1622-3) the names of Philip Smith and Daniel Aynesworth are recorded as being elected Masters or Wardens of the Norwich goldsmiths; and for a number of years afterwards these officers were regularly chosen, and authentic assays made.
