An exceptionally rare piece of early East Anglian provincial silver dating to the reign of Charles I. The silver cup, of plain simple form, has a tapering bowl with cast baluster stem and spreading foot. A nice feature is the original slightly hand beaten finish which is visible on the inside.

Contains 120ml.
Weight 118 grams, 3.7 troy ounces.
Height 13cm. Diameter 7.8 (top), 6.8cm (foot).
Norwich 1632.
Maker’s mark “Pelican in her Piety”.
Sterling silver.

Marks. Stamped around the top rim with a full set of Norwich silver hallmarks, the foot with the “Rose Crowned”.

Norwich silver. Although silversmiths were working in Norwich since the 12th century, the first hallmarks there were recorded in 1565. In 1706 the office closed and ceased marking and as a result there are few items of silver in preservation bearing the mark.

The cup is in very good condition with moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Exactly the condition a collector would wish to see. An excellent example.

Maker Information

Maker: Pelican in her piety

The “pelican in her piety” mark is recorded in the Norwich section of Jackson’s “Gold & Silver Marks of England” on silver spoons and a communion cup during the period 1624-39. Bonhams state on their website that “current scholarship suggests the mark of pelican in its piety may be that of Daniel Aynesworth”. In (1622-3) the names of Philip Smith and Daniel Aynesworth are recorded as being elected Masters or Wardens of the Norwich goldsmiths; and for a number of years afterwards these officers were regularly chosen, and authentic assays made.
