Description

An unusual double sided antique silver cigarette case with niello decoration and original gilt interior. The top has a chequered black and white purse decoration with a swivel catch. The reverse has a niello decorated scene of a large square with monumental buildings. Weight 93 grams, 3 troy ounces. Top measures 9.5 x 5.2 cms. Height 1.6 cms. Marked inside top, centre and bottom with Russian silver marks. Dated 1865.

Literature: Russian silver fineness is measured in zolotniks and there are 96 zolotniks to the Russian pound. 84 zolotniks corresponds to 875 parts per 1000 silver whereas sterling silver has 925 parts per 1000 silver.

This attractive silver box is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. The gilt inside is still bright and good. The silver marks are good and clear. The niello is a little worn. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
