Description
An attractive sterling silver wine jug of globular form having a plain silver mount with hinged lid. The crystal body has a swirly cut star design. Engraved to the top is an eagle crest and stylised monogram. Traces of gilt to the interior. Height 16cm. Spread 12.5cm. Birmingham 1890. Maker John Grinsell & Sons.

Condition
The jug is in very good condition with no damage. Stamped on the mount with a full set of English silver hallmarks, the lid with the lion and date letter. The engraving is crisp.

Maker: John Grinsell & Sons
John Grinsell, a Birmingham manufacturer, the business was originally established before 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne. The partnership was dissolved (1871) and John Grinsell started a new business with his sons (Thomas Bywater Grinsell, James Erazmus Grinsell, Lorenzo Grinsell and Joseph Charles Grinsell) as John Grinsell & Sons and London and Glasgow showrooms were opened. In 1905c. the firm became John Grinsell & Sons Ltd and later purchased by Barker Ellis & Co Ltd. The trade mark "Cupid standing on a scroll" was registered in 1879. The firm was specialized in the manufacture of silver-mounted glass, stoneware and ceramic items.
