A decorative antique sterling silver wine jug of elegant form. The crystal body has criss cross cutting and a star cut base. The silver mount has engraved and embossed decoration. The inside of the lid is gilded. Contains 1000 ml. Height 27 cm. Spread 12 cm. London 1872. Maker John Grinsell & Sons.

The antique wine jug is in very good condition. The mount is stamped with a full set of English silver hallmarks (slight wear), the lid with Victoria’s head and date letter. The glass is in good condition with a couple of light chips commensurate with age. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflection in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: John Grinsell & Sons

John Grinsell, a Birmingham manufacturer, the business was originally established before 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne. The partnership was dissolved (1871) and John Grinsell started a new business with his sons (Thomas Bywater Grinsell, James Erazmus Grinsell, Lorenzo Grinsell and Joseph Charles Grinsell) as John Grinsell & Sons and London and Glasgow showrooms were opened. In 1905c. the firm became John Grinsell & Sons Ltd and later purchased by Barker Ellis & Co Ltd. The trade mark "Cupid standing on a scroll" was registered in 1879. The firm was specialized in the manufacture of silver-mounted glass, stoneware and ceramic items.
