Literature. Decorated ostrich eggs were considered rare and exotic items in antiquity. Throughout the ages they have been engraved, painted, and embellished with ivory, precious metals and faience fittings. These luxury items have been found throughout the Middle Eastern regions spreading through the Mediterranean and English examples exist from the 16th century.
