Description

A rare set of antique silver owl condiments. All in a fitted case, retailed by Asprey. The matching set consists of an owl sugar caster, owl salt shaker and pair of owl peppers. All with glass button eyes and finely chased decorative detail.

Castor – 102 grams, 3.2 troy ounces, height 11 cms
Salt – 41 grams, 1.3 troy ounces, height 7.5 cms
Peppers – 57 grams (pair), 1,8 troy ounces, height 6 cms.

All London 1867/71 and same maker Charles Edward Brown.

Sterling silver.

Condition

This lovely silver owl cruet is in very good condition. The engraving is crisp. Each has a full set of English silver hallmarks on the body (at the back) and on the top (on the neck). The salt is gilded inside the base, the peppers are inside the bases and top.

Maker Information

Maker: Edward Charles Brown

Edward Charles Brown, apprenticed to George J Richards 1845, free 1852. Another apprentice, William Comyns, was also freed in 1852. Brown became a partner in George Richards' business in 1857 trading as Richards & Brown. Brown continued with this business name after Richards’ retirement in 1867 until Brown retired at the end of 1882. He died 1883.
