Description

An unusual 17th century miniature table of rectangular form standing on cabriole legs. A perfect display for a small tea set or pair of candlesticks. The solid wood top, with inset armorial plaque, is mounted with a silver framework. The underside still has the original claws to hold the wood in place and the pretty little wing nuts for the silver plaque; the remains of an old collector’s label can be seen in the corner.

Top measures 26.2cm x 16.4cm. Height 6.3cm.
Maker “GJ”.
English, circa 1680.
Provincial silver. Probably from East Anglia.

Marks. Marked on the top rim of the silver in two places with maker’s mark “GJ” surrounded by dots within a circular punch. This mark is not listed in Jackson’s or David Mitchell’s books of silver marks. After taking advice on the mark, and also the arms, we consider the trivet to be English provincial, probably East Anglian (Bury St Edmunds or Ipswich?).

Arms. The arms are for Sir Henry North, 2nd Baronet of Mildenhall, Suffolk (c.1635 – 5 July 1695). He was educated at King Edward VI School, Bury St Edmunds and St John’s College, Cambridge. On 29 August 1671 he succeeded to his father’s baronetcy. Between 1678 and 1688, North was a Deputy Lieutenant of Suffolk. In 1685, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Suffolk, holding the seat in 1687. He did not seek re-election in 1689 following the Glorious Revolution, and died in 1695 at which point his title became extinct.

Condition

In very good condition. There is a minimal small wood loss in one corner – see photo.
