A 3 piece Victorian sterling silver tea set of octagonal can shape. Very stylish with straight sides and flat top with inset hinge. Engraved with panels of leaf motifs, wriggle work and dot borders. Pale interior gilding to the sugar bowl and milk jug. Weight 1027 grams, 33 troy ounces. Teapot contains 1000 ml. Teapot height 12 cms, spread 26 cms. London 1880. Maker William Hutton


This attractive silver tea set is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. The engraving is crisp. Each piece is stamped with English silver hallmarks which are clear and matching. The teapot is marked on both body and inside the lid. This set has been tested for water retention and does not leak. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: William Hutton

William Hutton, manufacturing silversmiths and platers, established in Birmingham in 1800, transferred to Sheffield in 1832. After Hutton's death the business continued under his son William Carr Hutton and his youngest son Herbert Hutton (senior, born 1843) as William Hutton & Son. William Carr Hutton died in 1865 and c. 1870 Herbert Hutton Sr. was joined by his brothers James Edward Hutton (b. 1839) and Robert (b. 1840) and the name changed to William Hutton & Sons. Their first London showroom opened in 1863, they acquired Rupert Favell & Co the London manufacturing silversmiths, and the firm became William Hutton & Sons Ltd. In 1902 they acquired Creswick & Co in 1902 and used their CROSS ARROWS mark. The firm also used the trade mark ANGLE PLATE The company closed in 1930 when it was absorbed by James Dixon & Sons Ltd.
