An excellent quality antique silver bottle ticket with a silver chain. Good weight. The elaborate bacchanalian scene portrays two cherubs holding flagons of wine surrounded by grape and vine leaf decoration and a face mask below. Engraved “CLARET” to the scroll centre.

Maker: Matthew Linwood

Matthew Linwood I, Birmingham silversmith, registered 3 marks between 1773 and 1801. He also produced Sheffield plate from premises in Edmund St. His son Matthew Linwood (1756-1826) was a notable maker of silver boxes and was made Guardian of the Birmingham assay office in 1811. Matthew Linwood II’s son Matthew Linwood III (1783-1847) entered partnership with his father and their mark was registered in 1813.
