This beautiful bowl is in very good, crisp condition with no damage. This bowl may have originally had a detachable Monteith rim.

Maker: George Garthorne
George Garthorne, London silversmith, apprenticed to Thomas Payne 1669, turned over to Francis Garthorne. Free 1680. Grimwade states that Garthorne’s only documented mark (as largeworker) was in 1697 however many bowls by Garthorne are documented as early as 1684 (source Georgina E. Lee Monteith Bowls). Specialist bowl maker, who introduced the detachable Monteith collar in 1684. Garthorne was also recorded as a “weigher” in the assay office. Died 1730.
