Description
English provincial silver. An attractive little antique sterling silver cream jug of globular shape with a simple curved handle. To the front is a hand engraved inscription in old fashioned cursive script. Contains 200 ml. Weight 148 grams, 4.7 troy ounces. Height 7.5 cms. Spread 10 cms. Diameter 5.5 cms. By the York maker James Barber & William Whitwell (1812-1821).
Condition
This lovely little silver jug is in very good condition with no damage or restoration. The engraving is still crisp. The silver marks are a little rubbed but still easy to read. The makers mark is indistinct but is undoubtably that of James Barber & William Whitwell, the York maker. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: James Barber & William Whitwell
James Barber and William Whitwell, York silversmiths. William joined James as partner in 1814 after Barber's previous partner, Robert Cattle, left the business on the 1st January 1814, to take charge of the mails and the post-horses at the York Tavern. Whitwell had been working as an assistant with the firm for many years. The partnership ended on the death of William Whitwell in 1823 aged 36 years.
