Description

A large early English silver flat top lidded tankard with a scroll handle having a decorative thumb piece and unusual decorations each side of the hinge. Good patina. Lovely plain design and hand beaten silver. To the front there is a hand engraved lion crest within a shield and a large decorative cartouche.

Contains 1500 ml.

Weight 863 grams, 27.7 troy ounces.

Height 20.5 cms (to top of thumb piece). Diameter 14 (top), 13.5 cms (base).

Fully marked on lid and body, makers marl on the handle.

Sterling silver

Literature: *It is unusual to have a makers name for a piece of silver of this early date as there are no precise records of silver makers’ marks prior to 1697. All records were destroyed in the fire at Goldsmiths Hall in 1681 when the Assay Office and apartments of the Assayer and Clerk in the south west wing of the building were burned down. From 1697 onwards Goldsmiths Hall has preserved a complete record of workmens’s marks, addresses, together with their names and the dates. Sometimes the details of makers can be discovered from old records such as the inventories of noble houses and other institutions.

Signed/Inscribed: Underneath there is an old Italian collectors label “Collezione Faraone” .

This rare antique silver tankard is in very good condition. Good patina. The lid and body have matching silver marks which are easy to read. The handle has two small dents either side of the top of the handle where the thumb piece has been touching for 350 years. The hand engraved crest and cartouche is contemporary and still crisp. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
