Description

A good early date. An antique silver wine jug of octagonal form on a shaped detachable foot. Decorated with matted background between plain gilded bands (gilding worn). Good gauge silver. Gilt interior. Engraved to the front “Signum Fidei”. The hinged cover has a later English coat of arms (probably Weldon of Swanscombe, Kent).

Weight 681 grams, 21.8 troy ounces.

Height 20.5 cm. Spread 16.5 cm.

Circa 1630.

Maker possibly Peter Hennig,

Linkoping Sweden.

Marks. Stamped underneath the foot the maker’s mark “PH” conjoined struck twice, possible town mark pierced and illegible. Peter Hennich’s makers mark is unrecorded but his son Henning Petri’s (of Nykoping) mark is identical but with the letters reversed. See: Andren, Hellner, Hernmarck and Holmquist, Svenskt Silversmide 1520-1850, Stockholm 1963, pp 413 and 488.

Literature. A tankard and bowl by the Swedish goldsmith Valentin Lennartson Weber of Linkoping (circa 1640), which share significant features with this jug such as the faceted sections, identical thumbpiece and plain bands along the ribbing, are illustrated in Kallstrom and Hernmark Svenskt Silversmide 1520-1850 1940/41 vol I illustrations 103 and 144. Weber became the second husband of Marina Larsdotter (died 1646) whose first husband was Peter Hennich.

Inscription. “Signum Fideii” meaning “Sign of Faith” probably refers to the confession of Lutheran Faith. Lutheranism became the state religion in Sweden at the end of 16th century.

Condition

In good usable condition. Signs of old repairs to the foot and the lid. The armorial engraved to the lid is probably circa 1780. The base of the jug stands a bit unevenly. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
