A composite set of early English silver spoons in the popular Hanover pattern. Lovely plain style. Britannia standard silver*. Each with a hand engraved crest to the reverse. Weight 446 grams, 14.3 troy ounces. London 1721. 4 spoons by Jane Lambe length 20.15 cms. 2 spoons by Paul Hanet length 19.75 cms. Hanet was one of the principal Huguenot spoon makers of his day.

Literature: *Britannia Standard. In 1696, so extensive had become the melting and clipping of coinage that the silversmiths were forbidden to use the sterling standard for their wares, but had to use a new higher standard, 95.8 per cent. New hallmarks were ordered, “the figure of a woman commonly called Britannia” and the lion’s head erased (torn off at the neck) replacing the lion passant and the leopard’s head crowned. This continued until the old standard of 92.5 per cent was restored in 1720. Britannia standard silver still continues to be produced even today.

This rare set of spoons are generally in very good condition with no damage or restoration. Each has a hand engraved crest of a lion to the reverse. A few of the marks are a bit rubbed. 2 of the stems bear traces of where a rubber band has been wrapped around the set (see photos). 4 spoons are by Jane Lambe and 2 spoons are by Paul Hanet. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.
