Description

A rare antique silver hexafoil salver with scalloped and reeded border and standing on 3 curved panelled feet. Britannia standard silver. Very plain style. This piece is made of heavy gauge silver and has a good weight. The patina is excellent. Hand engraved to the centre is a contemporary armorial within a shell topped cartouche. Weight 755 grams, 24.2 troy ounces. Diameter 26.5 cms. Height 4 cms. London 1725. Maker Anthony Nelme. These 6 sided salvers (and also the octafoil 8 sided salver) generally date between 1710 and 1730 and are extremely sought after.

Condition

A fine early English antique silver salver in excellent condition with no damage or repair. Thick gauge silver. Excellent antique colour. Contemporary engraved arms. This piece is exactly how you would wish it to be. Please note that this item is not new and will show moderate signs of wear commensurate with age. Reflections in the photograph may detract from the true representation of this item.

Maker: Anthony Nelme

Anthony Nelme, London silver maker, apprenticed to Richard Rowley 1672, turned over to Isaac Dighton , free 1679/80. 1st mark pre-1697 but entered on commencement of the new register. There is a previous unregistered? sterling mark recorded by Jackson dated 1691/2. Assistant to the Court of the Goldsmiths 1703, warden 1717 and 1723. Died circa 1723. His work showed signs of Hugeunot influence and his considerable output included many municipal pieces such as maces, as well as toilet services and other large pieces.
