Description

A good antique sterling silver lidded tankard with domed lid. Lovely plain design with simple straight sides, the body with a concentric reed ring to the base of the handle. The hand engraved armorial has a crest and motto “Stabilis in Fide”. Owners initials to the top of the handle. Contains 1070 ml.

Weight 864 grams, 27.7 troy ounces.

Height 18.2 cm. Spread 18 cm.

Marks. Stamped with a fully matching and clear set of English silver marks to the body and lid, handle with maker’s mark.

Literature. The term “tankard” is traditionally used for a single handed drinking vessel with a lid. Antique silver tankards are usually much bigger than mugs and sometimes have a quart capacity or more. The earliest date at which the familiar shaped tankard occurs is circa 1640 although these are exceedingly rare.

Condition

A good quality tankard in very good condition. The engravings are crisp.
