Description

A handsome antique sterling silver coffee pot of semi-shaped form raised on a shallow pedestal foot. Acorn finial. Elegant plain design and graceful shaped spout. To the front there is a hand engraved crest within a decorative oval cartouche. Uninscribed. Contains 850 ml. Weight 688 grams, 22.1 troy ounces. Height 23.5cm. Spread across spout and handle 21cm. London 1748. Maker Thomas Gilpin.

The coffee pot is in very good condition with no damage. With a full set of English silver hallmarks underneath, (the lid with the lion and makers mark). The wooden handle is original and has a small hairline fault to the base.

Thomas Gilpin, apprenticed to John Wells 1720. First mark entered as smallworker 1730, 2nd mark as largeworker (and 3rd small mark) 1739. Gilpin is noted in Jackson’s as an extremely accomplished exponent of the rococo style. He is well represented by candlesticks and tureens at Althorp.
